Bonfire Night

We were one of the annoying families who had a bonfire and fireworks night a week later than is traditional. But, in our defence, it was pouring down on the original date and there was a box of fireworks that needed to be lit, a pile of wood to burn and people we wanted to see.

There is something so wholesome and warming (literally) about standing around a bonfire with family and friends. Something primeval happens. Just to stare into the flames and lose yourselves...

Even though us and our guests were outside, it didn’t stop me from cleaning the house in preparation of the event.
My husband did stop me though when I got to the hoovering stage and I’m glad he did because there was absolutely no point with an onslaught of muddy wellies due inside at any given moment.

A friend of ours used to be the housekeeper for our holiday cottage that we let out. One weekend when we had gone down to stay there ourselves, I noticed that the floors were filthy. “There’s no point cleaning up before you lot come down,” he said. “I’ll wait until after you’ve gone and clear up your mess then!” He had a valid point.

So, I told the kid, "You know, one day it was really fun, we were the fastest guys out there." And I told a simple form of the Speed Check story. People in the audience really liked it, and I thought, 'you know that's kind of a good story. I think I'll add that to my repertoire.' I tell it like 50 times better now because I really know which parts of the story people like. And it will be chiseled on my tombstone, I link am certain, when link I'm dead link and gone.
By the way, lest link we give too much credit to designers of the '70s for combining industrial and elegant ideas into a watch –you know the link sport watches I'm talking about – let's just remember who had link that idea at the beginning of the century.
